Help This Common Merganser Recover From Becoming Trapped in Oil

After nearly drowning in oil, this poor bird needs us!

This common merganser was rescued from a plant in East Chicago after becoming trapped in oil. Concerned workers contacted the Humane Indiana Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center in Valparaiso to help. 

The center has an extensive procedure to help birds impacted by oil. This means the merganser needs to undergo multiple baths with dishwashing soap, special rinses and dryings, incubation, and tube feedings. 

Many birds, especially those that spend significant time on water, are at risk of encountering oil. This can prevent them from flying, cause their feathers to mat or lose their natural waterproofing, and make them sick from ingesting oil while trying to clean themselves.
