Product Features
Working with Fair Trade certified organizations is an important part of what we do. This product is made by artisans that are fairly compensated for their skilled work, and helps provide a living wage as well as safe work conditions.

NOVICA artisan Saktut Raitawati and Threads of Life have collaborated to presented this beautiful kimono. The kimono is made from cotton and woven in East Java. It is naturally dyed by Threads of Life using dye plants from indigo (Strobilanthes cusia) and a mangrove species (Ceriops tegal).

  • Eco-friendly fabric dyes produced with all-natural and non-polluting methods; friendly to your skin, the artists, and the earth. Many natural dye plants also have healing properties.
  • Sustainable cultivated and harvested plants, to ensure the continuation of the forests and plants that produce leaves, barks, roots, and these beautiful dye colors. These dyes are diligently, responsibly sourced; protecting the forest, livelihood, and traditional rituals of which they are an ancient part.
  • Empowering women and protecting families. Generating income for local Indonesian women, farmers, and artisans. When the women can generate income at home, often the men do not have to leave to support their families by working off-island.
  • Supporting indigenous communities and traditional weaving and dyeing techniques for over 1000 women on 12 islands across Indonesia.
  • Contributing to research and development of new techniques using natural dyes to generate more income for all these people, in the Threads of Life dye studio.
  • Treat them with respect and these clothes will be with you for many years. Natural dyes do not like harsh laundry soaps. Dry cleaning recommended, or gently hand wash with very mild PH balanced soap. Dry flat, out of the sun.
  • materials: 100% cotton
  • Hand-crafted item -- color, size and/or motif may vary slightly

Artisan Information

Threads of Life

Threads of Life is about the ancestral worldview of the indigenous peoples of the Indonesian archipelago. We support the continued practice of this wisdom by its custodians, and we share this wisdom with the world. We recognize that this worldview is embodied in and transmitted through the objects of material culture within these traditions, through the ways in which these objects are made, through the rituals associated with their use, and through the oral traditions associated with each of these. We seek to share this wisdom in like manner.

We work in two ways. First, we work directly with over a thousand women weavers on twelve islands across Indonesia, commissioning and reselling high-value heirloom-quality textiles and baskets made with local materials and natural dyes. The income we bring to the women we work with helps them maintain the dignity of their culture and identity, and make a living while doing so.

"Second, we work with smallholder farmers and harvester groups across the archipelago to buy responsibly sourced natural dyes to use in our artisanal natural dye studio in Bali. Embodying the values and skills we have learned from the women weavers we work with, we hand-make natural dyed cloth by natural processes for commercial clients.

"Threads of Life's collaboration with Saktut Raitawati brings together these two aspects of our work. We are dyeing hand-spun, handwoven scarves from weavers in Java to Saktut's designs, and we are dyeing commercial fabric that Saktut makes into beautiful garments."

Shop all NOVICA products

NOVICA was started with a dream to create a better world for artisans, because a better world for artisans is a better world for all.

Along the way, the founders of NOVICA discovered something very important - as artisans around the world succeeded, there was also a visible and profound impact on the communities around them.

Your purchases are that powerful. They directly and indirectly provide for education, help with health care, fund basic needs, support children, preserve disappearing arts, and of course, spread happiness around the world.

The founders of NOVICA had a vision of the future that is not one of mega factories producing cookie cutter products for all to cheaply consume. Instead, a bright future that celebrates artisans who take the time to create an item by hand. A future where time is protected, where stories are told, where unique details are honored. Love, respect, inclusiveness become driving force.
