Crafted by a women's cooperative in New Delhi, India that creates purses from antique saris that would otherwise be burned to recover their gold or silver content. By putting old saris to use in new handbags, the original craftsmanship is preserved and each bag becomes a work of art -- and the women of the cooperative earn badly-needed income to care for their children and households. Expect each bag to vary and be a bit unique -- just like the women who once wore the original sari!
Based in New Dehli, India, the WorldFinds artisan group provides work for economically disadvantaged women from poor villages around the city, many of whom are often the sole provider for their families. Several artisans who begin work with the group are provided with the resources and training to go on to start their own artisan groups and businesses. The group is very dedicated to women's empowerment, and provides childcare, healthcare, and education to its artisans as well as maintaining a scholarship fund dedicated to girl's higher education.
