The U.S. food system is plagued by an alarming problem: nearly 40% of the food produced each year goes to waste. On a daily basis, Americans throw out more than 1,250 calories per person—more than half of the recommended daily intake for adults. Recovering just one-third of the food we discard each year would be enough to feed the 40 million Americans who face food insecurity, making food waste a tremendous social loss. The environmental implications of this waste are equally devastating - food waste accounts for 25 percent of freshwater use and is responsible for 2.6% of all greenhouse gas emissions—the equivalent of 37 million cars, or 1 in 7 vehicles on the road.
Greater Good Charities works with Food Recovery Network to help stop food waste and feed hungry people. Food Recovery Network unites college students to recover perishable food that would otherwise go to waste from their campus dining halls or local restaurants. Then, students deliver this food directly to shelters, food banks, and churches—serving those who need it most. Today, the Food Recovery Network supports 179 student chapters in the US & District of Columbia and provides them with their model of combating hunger through food recovery while engaging young leaders in their communities. These food donations also provide critical cost savings to the receiving nonprofits at an average of $7,000 per year per agency.

Together, YOUR donations have helped feed thousands of hungry people! Last year, the Food Recovery Network's food donations saved shelter and food bank partners an average of $7,000 per year—equivalent to an $8,000 market value in food product! These cost savings allow organizations to reallocate funding to other essential services, including housing, healthcare, and educational resources. Moreover, many partners report that they are able to offer their clients a greater variety of healthy food as a result of FRN’s food donations.

Food Recovery Network (FRN) unites students at colleges and universities nationwide to fight food waste and hunger by recovering perishable food that would otherwise go to waste from their campuses and surrounding communities and donating it to people in need.
